This is only relevant to you if you own a pay-monthly phone (not a pay-as-you-go phone).

The networks will usually offer you a free phone upgrade after 12 months of having your phone, if you spend over a certain amount each month on average. For example, T-Mobile offered (2003) these upgrades to customers who spend an average £30 per month on their bill. Different networks have different levels (some have no set level). You can find this out simply by calling your network.

Now, if you are due for an upgrade, which can be free or at least very cheap, what is the point in paying for mobile phone insurance? You can save this money by only insuring your phone when you are NOT due for an upgrade.

Some insurance companies will tie you into a contract that is 12 months long, but most will not.

Here's what you do to save money ...
1. Insure youre phone when it is new, because the network will not offer you another upgrade for another 12 months or so, and to replace the phone without any upgrade subsidy will be very expensive.
2. When you are nearing the end of you 12 months (and paricularly after 12 months), and are heading towards a free / subsidised upgrade, you cancel your mobile phone insurance for a few months. Why? Because if anything happens to your phone, you can simply get it replaced by using your upgrade from the network.

When you do get your new upgrade phone make sure you re-insure it. To replace the new phone will be very expensive, as you are 12 months away from your next upgrade subsidy, so you will have to pay the FULL replacement cost which can be £200 - £400
